Faculty who are interested in reviewing lists of library withdrawal candidates should download the spreadsheet for a specific call number range (click here to see an explanation of Library of Congress call number classifications). Titles of concern can be emailed to Tom Reich firstname.lastname@example.org or your department's library liaison.
Withdrawn titles may be offered to other libraries and non-profit groups, or offered for sale as part of the continuous Library Book Sale on the main floor of the LRC/Library.
In an effort to have a global impact on literacy, the Library has partnered with Better World Books (BWB) http://www.betterworldbooks.com/ and the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. http://www.wisnic.org/.
We believe that education and access to books are basic human rights. Working together, with our literacy partners, we will cycle many of our withdrawn titles to help fund high-impact literacy projects around the world. By finding old books new homes, we have created a sustainable solution for diverting books from landfills. BWB Donations and Discards program helps us manage our withdrawn books and unneeded gift books by either selling them on over 52 online marketplaces or donating items to global literacy programs. Any proceeds are shared with our nonprofit literacy program - the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas.
The Library Book Sale (run in cooperation with campus Surplus Sales) often includes gift books that are donated to the library and selected older titles that have been weeded from library collections. Proceeds from the book sale are used to support the purchase of current paperbacks and audio-books for the Leisure Reading collection, to encourage reading for the fun of it!
Potential Discard Lists will be posted during the regular 9-month academic calendar. List(s) includes books that have been selected by librarians for withdrawal. The majority of the books are pre-2000, and have had no use since 2000. Items proposed for withdrawal will remain shelved in the Library during a designated period for review. Faculty are encouraged to review the lists and contact us if there are items they want the Library to keep. Lists will be available for review for a minimum of 3 months. The spreadsheet is in Excel format.
Lists below are in order by date posted
The following list of items have been selected by librarians for withdrawal and are last copies of their editions in the UW System. Other Univ. of Wisconsin libraries may contact us as soon as possible if there are items they want transferred to their library.
