How to Use Search@UW: New Interface

General Information

What's going on?

The Search@UW user interface is undergoing a front-end overhaul.  The changes are focused on improving usability with an update of the look and feel of the search tool.  This is the first such revision of the product by our vendor.

What will be different?

You'll notice changes to the results list,  item access and details tabs, and actions choices.  There is also a complete overhaul to My Account and eShelf, where you now use a push pin to designate an item for your Favorites list.

Improvements have also been made to the Advanced Search screen, the handling of Boolean Operators, and the Recommendation engine.

For UW Requests, the new site will display holdings locations within the UW Library System, but the process will remain the same with the selection of the lending campus made automatically.

The overall design has also been revamped with a more modern and mobile-friendly look. It also now supports secure connections via HTTPS.

Timeline

The new interface is being rolled out by the vendor through quarterly upgrades. The next release will be in March.

Our plan is to replace the current interface with the new one after the Spring semester, in late May, 2017.

If you prefer, you can start using the new interface now!

Known Issues

  • The upgraded versions of the Journals A-Z List and Citation Linker are still under development, so both of those functions will link to the current interface.
  • Not all specialized features (including virtual browse, citation trail, and personalization) are yet available.
  • The list of libraries and locations where you can limit your results contain extraneous characters (in the form of $$WISC). This is a known defect and a fix is planned for the March 2017 release.
  • The drop down menu to choose a subset of resources to search (books, articles, etc.) no longer appears on the initial search screen. This is a deliberate change. First do an everything search, then further limit your results, if necessary. The Advanced Search also provides this functionality.
