A guide for students, faculty and staff on copyright related to campus activities.

Best Practices for Using Copyrighted Materials in Canvas

We suggest the following best practices to support the appropriate use of materials within Canvas. These suggestions are not intended as legal advice; rather, they aim to assist you in aligning your use of course materials with University policies, procedures, and legal requirements.

  • Whenever possible, link to legal materials that already reside online such as library resources, rather than creating and uploading copies to Canvas.

  • If you can't find a link to content UWSP has access to, contact Course Reserves for assistance. Library staff will:
    • license the material for use if that is an option.
    • conduct a Fair Use evaluation before uploading to Canvas if no license can be obtained.
    • ensure scanned/uploaded copies meet accessibility standards.
    • provide attribution to original creator and copyright holders with the material.
    • include Do Not Reproduce warning with the material.

  • Use alternative OER content, licensed under Creative Commons.
